Acai vs Pitaya: What Is the Difference and Which Should You Order?
2026-08-29 · Genuine Fresche
Stand at our counter long enough and you will hear the question every few minutes: what is the pink one? The purple bowls are acai and the pink ones are pitaya, and while the two get blended and topped the same way, they are completely different fruits with completely different personalities.
Acai: the deep purple one
Acai is a small, dark purple berry from palm trees in the Amazon. It barely has any sugar of its own, which surprises people, and its flavor is earthy and rich, somewhere in the neighborhood of blackberry with a hint of dark chocolate. That low sugar content is also why pre made acai bases get sweetened so heavily at the factory. The berry itself was never candy.
We blend organic acai with whole frozen fruit and real juice, so the fruit does the sweetening. Ten of our fourteen bowls are built on it, including the Original, the bowl Marcy and Brad opened with in 2011: strawberry, blueberry, banana and acai sorbet, topped with granola, fresh fruit and a drizzle of honey.
Pitaya: the pink one
Pitaya is dragonfruit, the spiky pink fruit that looks like it landed from space. Blended, it turns a shade of magenta no filter can improve. The flavor is lighter and brighter than acai, gently sweet, a little like kiwi and melon, and it makes the most refreshing bowl on our board on a July afternoon in Arizona.
We build two bowls on it. The Pitaya Colada blends pineapple, coconut milk and pitaya, and the Pitaya Passion runs mango, banana, pitaya and passion fruit. Both also come as smoothies.
The quick comparison
- Color: acai is deep purple, pitaya is bright pink.
- Flavor: acai is earthy and rich, pitaya is light and tropical.
- Sweetness: both of our blends are sweetened by fruit, not syrup. Pitaya reads slightly sweeter and brighter.
- Texture: identical here. Both are blended thick enough to eat with a spoon.
- Diet notes: both blends are plant based as written, and every bowl is gluten free with no swap needed.
Which should you order first?
If you want to know what the acai bowl fuss has been about since 2011, start with the Original. If it is a hundred and eight degrees and you want something that tastes like a beach, take the Pitaya Colada. There is no wrong door here.
And because everything is blended to order, the answer can also be both. Small bowls exist for a reason.
