Are Acai Bowls Actually Healthy? An Honest Answer About the Sugar

2026-08-29 · Genuine Fresche

Search this question and you get two confident answers. Half the internet says acai bowls are a superfood. The other half says they are milkshakes wearing gym clothes. Both sides are right, because they are describing two different products that happen to share a name.

We have been making acai bowls in the East Valley since 2011, longer than almost anyone in Arizona, so let us give you the answer the listicles skip.

The question that actually matters: what is the base?

Most acai bowls, in Arizona and everywhere else, start with a pre made scoopable base. It arrives at the shop frozen in a tub, already blended, already sweetened. It is fast and consistent, and it is usually loaded with added sugar, because sugar is what makes a pre made frozen product taste like anything.

When an article says an acai bowl can carry as much sugar as a dessert, that is the product it is describing. And for that product, the criticism is fair.

A bowl blended to order from whole fruit is a different food. Ours start with whole frozen strawberries, blueberries, banana, mango, pineapple or raspberries, plus organic acai or pitaya, blended with real apple juice, coconut milk or water. The sweetness in the blend is fruit. There are no syrups and no concentrates.

Fruit sugar and added sugar are not the same conversation

Whole fruit comes with fiber, water, vitamins and minerals packaged around its sugar, which is why dietary guidance treats an apple differently from a spoonful of sugar. Added sugar is the thing health authorities tell people to limit.

A whole fruit bowl still has natural sugar in it. It is fruit. But you are eating actual strawberries and blueberries and banana, not a sweetened concentrate, and your body notices the difference in how full you feel afterward.

How to order a genuinely healthy bowl anywhere

Five questions that sort the real thing from the milkshake, at our counter or anyone else's:

What we do about it

Everything above is how Genuine Fresche has operated since Marcy and Brad Olsen opened the first shop in Gilbert in 2011. Blends made to order from whole fruit. Honey as an optional drizzle, never mixed into the base, and it comes off with one word. Peanut butter made in house, fresh every day, from our own recipe, plus natural almond and pecan butters. If you want the full philosophy, the whole food page covers it.

So, are acai bowls healthy? Ours is a bowl of blended whole fruit with real toppings, in a size you choose, with protein if you want it. Read the ingredient list anywhere you go, and if the list starts with a tub, keep driving.
